The Earth's climate always keeps changing, but it is the recent acceleration of this change that has caused concern to many scientists, authors and all people with a vested interest in our environment. Our understanding of the beginning of this increased rate of climate change is now thought to have begun with our discovery that the use of fossil fuels increases the amount of CO ₂ in our atmosphere, contributing to the greenhouse effect.
