How to write for YSJ

Have an idea, in many ways the hardest part, but don’t worry the article only needs to be 1-3 pages of typed A4. Any scientific subject will do, just right about something that interest you.

Research your topic, this is very important as if you do not research you could get things wrong and your article will be rejected by the editors. You must not just copy an article from another publication or website either. It can be the inspiration for you work but you must gather information from different places and create your own work. Keep a list of places that you use for information as you will need it when you cite your sources. Some good places to start are.

http://www.howstuffworks.com/

http://wikipedia.org/

http://encarta.msn.com/

http://www.answers.com/

http://www.bbc.co.uk/

http://www.encyclopedia.com/

But also use search engines like Google, Bing and  Yahoo to find websites specific to your article.

Write the article, this is easier than you might think, just plan out what you want to say and then say it. You’re not righting an essay so break it up into small chunks with titles. An introduction and a conclusion help to frame your article and make it easier to read. Once you have written your article read it though a few times to make sure it makes sense and all spelling and grammar are correct.

Add pictures, this is important for making the article enjoyable to read. But be careful there a strict laws on the use of other people pictures on the internet. You can not use any picture that you do not have the rights to. Your own pictures are fine and so are pictures in the public domain, you can find pictures in the public domain at:

http://wikipedia.org/

http://www.bigfoto.com/

http://gimp-savvy.com/PHOTO-ARCHIVE/

and many more places.

It is your responsibility to check the copyright on pictures and place the URL of any pictures you use in your article. If you find a picture that is particularly good but is copyrighted then place a link in your article to it. An picture that is not properly referenced will be removed by the editors.

Style your article, Please use Microsoft Word; the house font for Young Scientists is:

Arial Font size 11, and Arial Black for titles, Font size 12, The Author’s name should be Arial Font size 12 and bold, references Arial Font size 12, subtitles Arial Font size 11 and bold. If you style the article yourself it means that the article does not have to be redone by the editors. If it is you may lose out some of your styling.  Colour and unusual layout are fine, but always try to imagine how it will look on a screen.

About you, Write two or three lines of biography about yourself and attach a small photo.  This should be colour and show mainly your face.

Submission: Finally, save your article and upload it here by filling in the form, preferably as a word document [.doc] or rich text format [.rtf]
